Sunday Morning Musings
I'm lousy at updating LJ. Especially lately. I'm slightly better at updating my facebook status. Requires less thought and fewer words. I feel like I should have something important or meaningful to say here. This is not that post.

As I type, my cat is trying to take over my desk. I'm not sure I'm going to win this one. So far she's claimed the mouse and a small portion of the keyboard - fortunately I don't need those at the moment, but it could get ugly when I do.

It's snowing. Or, it snowed. I'm feeling to lazy to look outside my window and see which. I distinctly remember the first time I saw it snowing this season outside my window at work. It was magical and wondrous, and I was a little kid again for a few minutes. We've reached the part of winter where that is completely gone, and my only reaction to snow is, 'oh, man, I'm going to have to shovel off my car AGAIN'.

(The cat has ceded the keyboard but claimed possession of the mousepad.)

I started working on a new home improvement project yesterday - making the master bathroom not be disgusting. A few minutes in, and I almost gave up and called the professionals in. If I actually manage to do this myself, I think I will take a vacation with the money I'm not paying to the contractors.

(My box of cables is a casualty, but the desk wars are now over. The sound of the box hitting the floor precipitated an unconditional retreat.)

I finally installed my fist WoW mod, at level 76. I'm not really sure what took me so long. I think I was afraid that installing a mod was the first step down the slippery path to true WoW addition. (I felt that way about professions for a while, too - and I'm not sure I was wrong about that.) But the mod (Carbonite) has drastically sped up my leveling. Probably halved the time it will take me, because I don't have to spend time figuring out what's where. I'm not convinced it doesn't remove some of the fun of the game, but, dammit, I want to get to 80 already.

It's interesting posting political things on Facebook these days, as some of my ultra-conservative relatives are now on and posting replies that deeply piss me off. ("Pundit X has a Jewish surname, so therefore they should support Bush unconditionally because Bush is supportive of Israel." "Why do Leftists make common cause with extremists (terrorists) within the Islamic religion who are diametrically opposed to everything the Left stands for?") I'm exercising a great deal of restraint for the sake of not alienating family members.

I'm grateful for the extra day off. Today will involve a lot of cleaning, organizing, and stripping wallpaper. And maybe some TV and WoW. You know, a nice, lazy day. :-)

And yet clearly they aren't. ;)

It's not him I'm worried about alienating. It's my aunt, who has a remarkable history of bad taste in men. ;-)

...must...resist.... (Not another time sink!)

'oh, man, I'm going to have to shovel off my car AGAIN'

When I bought my first house, my dad was shocked/surprised/disappointed that it didn't have a garage ("How could someone build a house in New England and not put a garage on it??"). Now that I have a garage, that whole shoveling-off thing is all but an artifact of the past. I heartily recommend you get one -- it'll change your whole attitude (especially if it's attached to the house -- then taking your car somewhere isn't even like going outside). :-)

I finally installed my fist WoW mod, at level 76.

*heh* I did the same thing: I was at 68 when the expansion raised the cap to 80. In my case, it was QuestHelper (I hear Carbonite is nice, but for the moment, I'll save the subscription fee). It certainly does speed things up. (Still, "the Seventies" seem like they are taking forever...and I'm only half-way through.)

Once I reach 80 and start going on raids, then I'll know I'm addicted. But, it's starting now. I've installed "Grid" (and a bunch of addons which support it), and I've been salivating over the possibilities enabled by macros ([info]enigmatized gave me a cool one which sells all of your vendor-trash in a single click, regardless of which bag it has wandered off into).

I'm not convinced it doesn't remove some of the fun of the game, but, dammit, I want to get to 80 already.

I'm certain that QuestHelper has, unfortunately (which is why I resisted it until I got into a raiding guild). I'm now turning the crank and jsut running my toon instead of enjoying the content. But, when I play with other people, they get antsy if I take my time, read the quests, talk the NPCs and so forth. So, the questing addon really just helped address the downsides of an already bad situation. ;-)

But, now that the ice is broken, there are some others that you really should consider (omen, recount, the Auctioneer suite, and Cartographer, for starters...and, if you like those, we can recommend others... ;-).

No subscription fee on Carbonite. Not the mod that I installed, anyway. But I hear quest helper is good too.

I want to stay light on the mods - I've gotten used to the interface the way it is - but I hear auctioneer is good.

And re: when the level cap was raised - I had been at 70 for like 3 weeks. ;-)

Apparently there is a "free" version and a "full" (subscription) version. (Clicky)

*heh* "I want to avoid electricity -- I've gotten used to reading by candlelight..." ;-)

Seriously, though, while I imagine that there is such thing as too many mods, I haven't hit it yet. (I expect it depends on your machine.) I'm adding them as I find uses/needs for them.

As for auctioneer, I like having it, but it's not the be-all-end-all. Also, with the expansion out, most people seem to be playing level 70-80 toons, and the auction house has become pretty quiet for the junque I tend to sell. :-(

Re the level cap, so it was like you'd hardly been capped at all -- not much invested in the old end-game content, then -- good timing. :-)

Okay, you have a level 76 character, and you thought that a mod would be the FIRST step towards addiction? Are you familiar with the term "denial?"

Indeed I am. But I will point out that I have only ONE character at or above level 70. ;-)

MY MISTAKE THEN YOU ARE CLEARLY NOT ADDICTED AT ALL ;)

I second Lisa's assertion: how can it be addiction if you're still experiencing it for the first time? ;-)

Perhaps I am not as addicted as others?

Hey!
How many hours did you spend playing Rock Band this weekend, Mr. Kettle? ;-)

None! (Not even Rock Band 2!) Though that's mainly due to my tendinitis.

Now, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, on the other hand, may have gotten an hour or two. Or ten. But I *know* I'm a gaming addict. ;-)
